119m Feadship Superyacht Breakthrough Wins Motor Yacht of the Year at 2026 World Superyacht Awards

The 119m superyacht Breakthrough has been named Motor Yacht of the Year at the 2026 World Superyacht Awards, affirming her position as one of the most technically ambitious yachts delivered in recent years.

The RWD-designed  Feadship project also secured a category win in the displacement motor yachts above 2,500GT segment, placing her among a small group of multi-award winners at this year’s ceremony. Delivered in 2025, Breakthrough stands as the largest yacht ever built in the Netherlands and one of the most closely followed projects in the global fleet.

A Defining Win at the World Superyacht Awards

The Motor Yacht of the Year title remains the most competitive and closely watched award at the World Superyacht Awards 2026, reserved for projects that push design, engineering, and build complexity forward.

Breakthrough’s dual recognition highlights the scale of the project and the depth of its technical development. With a gross tonnage of 7,247GT and a length of 118.8 meters, she operates at the very top end of the market, where each build represents a multi-year design and engineering effort.

The judges cited her approach to alternative energy, onboard systems, and spatial planning as key factors. At the time of construction, no established regulatory framework existed for hydrogen storage or fuel-cell propulsion in yachts of this size, requiring close collaboration between the shipyard, classification bodies, and flag state authorities.

A New Direction for Low-Emission Yachting

At the center of Breakthrough is a hydrogen fuel-cell system that redefines how onboard energy is generated and managed. Developed by Feadship with Lloyd’s Register and the Cayman Islands flag authority, the system uses cryogenically stored liquid hydrogen to produce electricity, with water as the only byproduct.

The installation required entirely new safety protocols, tank design, and system integration. A double-walled cryogenic tank stores approximately four tons of hydrogen, feeding 16 fuel-cell modules that power the yacht’s hotel load and support low-emission operation.

This setup allows for zero-emission cruising under certain conditions and silent operation at anchor for extended periods. For longer passages, the motor yacht is equipped with generators capable of running on Hydro-treated Vegetable Oil and methanol, with onboard reforming enabling further flexibility.

Beyond propulsion, Breakthrough incorporates a heat recovery system and an intelligent energy management platform that adjusts onboard consumption based on guest occupancy. These systems address one of the largest contributors to a yacht’s environmental footprint - energy use for onboard living.

Design Shaped by Technology and Scale

The technical brief had a direct impact on the yacht’s layout. Machinery and energy systems are concentrated on a single midships deck, requiring careful spatial planning to maintain guest areas and circulation. Naval architecture by Feadship De Voogt Naval Architects supports a displacement steel hull with an aluminum superstructure, delivering a 19-meter beam and a transatlantic range of 6,500 nautical miles at 14 knots.

Exterior and interior design by RWD balance the yacht’s volume with a controlled, modern profile. A high number of hull openings - including 14 balconies and seven unfolding platforms - introduces light and direct access to the water across multiple decks.

The aft main deck centers around an 8.2-meter infinity pool with a glass floor and contraflow system, positioned above the beach club and spa. Above, the sundeck doubles as a helipad and open-air leisure space, with shaded dining and a forward hot tub.

Interior Approach - Light, Texture, and Layered Spaces

Inside, the design follows a calm, residential direction shaped by natural materials and soft tonal shifts between decks. Limed oak, eucalyptus, marble, travertine, and leather create a consistent palette, supported by large expanses of glazing and open sightlines.

A central atrium staircase wraps around a glass elevator, drawing natural light through the yacht and linking social spaces across multiple levels. The layout introduces a series of smaller, private zones alongside larger gathering areas, including reading corners, coffee points, and private dining spaces.

Among the standout features is the semi-submerged Nemo lounge, positioned just below the waterline to offer direct views of the surrounding sea. Additional onboard spaces include a cinema, library, wellness center with hammam and sauna, and a fully equipped gym. The owner’s deck is designed as a private apartment, with two bedrooms, dual bathrooms and dressing areas, a gym, offices with fireplaces, and a forward-facing jacuzzi.

A Top-Tier Position in the Global Fleet

Breakthrough currently ranks number 30 in the YachtBuyer YB100, placing her firmly within the upper tier of the global superyacht fleet by volume. At 7,247GT, this position reflects the scale of her internal space as much as her length, underlining the complexity involved in delivering yachts at this level.

Projects of this size remain rare, and fewer still introduce new propulsion frameworks. Breakthrough’s hydrogen fuel-cell system sets her apart within this segment, reinforcing her relevance not only as a large yacht, but as a technically significant one.

As one of the largest yachts in the world, her market impact extends beyond design and engineering. The yacht’s 2025 sale, handled by Edmiston, stands as one of the most important brokerage transactions of the year and played a central role in the firm securing YachtBuyer Brokerage Company of the Year by total sales value. At an individual level, the deal contributed to Alex Busher being named YachtBuyer Broker of the Year by sales value, highlighting the scale and complexity involved in transactions at this end of the market.

Breakthrough’s recognition at the World Superyacht Awards reinforces her position as one of the most important recent deliveries in the superyacht sector. The project required new engineering solutions, new regulatory frameworks, and a design approach that could absorb both without compromising usability. She sits alongside other standout Feadship builds, including the 110m Ambassador, the 103m Ulysses, and the 99m Madame Gu, underlining the yard’s continued strength at the very top end of the global fleet.
