Design & Construction

Designed around a displacement steel hull and an aluminium superstructure she features a 8.8m beam and a 2.95m draft. The yacht is built over 3 decks with an internal volume of 499 GT (Gross Tonnes).

The yacht was designed and constructed in compliance with the Lloyds Register technical standards.

Exterior Design

The 45m (147.6ft) Awatea was delivered by Royal Hakvoort in 2008 and remains one of the most significant yachts from the Dutch builder's modern era. At launch she was the fourth largest yacht ever built by the yard and introduced Cor D. Rover's design language to the Hakvoort fleet.

Her profile combines traditional long-range yacht proportions with more contemporary detailing. A high bow, extended foredeck and substantial freeboard point towards offshore capability and comfortable passagemaking, while the relatively low superstructure avoids the top-heavy appearance often found on yachts of similar volume.

The yacht's appearance has evolved over time. She launched with a dark navy hull and red boot stripe before later adopting a distinctive pastel "Peter Blue" finish. Following her 2025-26 refit at Balk Shipyard, Awatea now has a Poseidon Metallic Blue hull that closely echoes her original colour scheme while giving the yacht a sharper, more modern appearance.

Several design decisions stand out when viewed alongside other yachts from the same period. The main deck and lower deck glazing is unusually generous for a 2008 build, introducing significantly more natural light than many contemporaries. Large hull-side windows break up the visual mass of the displacement hull while also improving sightlines from guest areas.

The long foredeck remains largely uncluttered, preserving working space around the anchoring equipment and contributing to the yacht's clean profile. A series of sheltered exterior decks sit aft, protected by substantial overhangs that make them usable across a wider range of climates than the open beach-club arrangements favoured today.

The recent refit included a complete hull and superstructure repaint, replacement of selected windows, revarnishing of exterior furnishings and deck joinery, corrosion treatment, fresh antifouling coatings and extensive upgrades to navigation and monitoring equipment. New radar systems, depth sensors, speed sensors and a modernised AMS and PMCS platform bring the yacht's operational systems much closer to contemporary standards.

Awatea features a "Peter Blue" hull and luxurious amenities, accommodating 14 guests for long voyages with a top speed of 13 knots and a range of 4,600 nautical miles.

Accommodation

Awatea can accommodate up to 14 guests and 9 crew, and is divided into a full-beam owner's suite, four guest staterooms, and additional Pullman berths.

The owner's suite is notable for its full-beam design and high ceilings of 2.3m. Accessed through a private study, the suite boasts a walk-in wardrobe, a generously sized bathroom complete with a whirlpool, stall shower, double washbasins, an infrared sauna, and a separate toilet, providing a private retreat for the yacht's owner.

Below deck, Awatea offers four guest staterooms that are unusually spacious for a yacht of her size. These staterooms are versatile, with beds that can be arranged as either doubles or twins, according to guests' needs. This flexibility is complemented by the inclusion of Pullman berths in two of the staterooms, allowing for additional guest accommodation. Each stateroom has its own ensuite bathroom, ensuring privacy and convenience for all guests aboard. For added practicality, there is dedicated storage space beneath the guest lobby for luggage, making for an uncluttered living environment.

Accommodating a crew of nine members, Awatea ensures that there is ample provision for those who operate and maintain the yacht. The crew quarters include four double cabins located on the lower deck, each furnished with upper and lower berths and ensuite bathrooms.

Performance & Capabilities

Powered by twin diesel Caterpillar (3508B DI-TA) 960hp engines running at 1600rpm, motor yacht Awatea is capable of reaching a top speed of 13 knots, and comfortably cruises at 11 knots. With her 71,223 litre fuel tanks she has a maximum range of 4,600 nautical miles at 11 knots.
