Design & Construction

Designed around a displacement steel hull and superstructure she features a 16m beam and a 5.9m draft. The yacht has an internal volume of 2,420 GT (Gross Tonnes).

Exterior Design

U-81 is an unusual addition to the yacht support fleet because it makes very little attempt to disguise its commercial roots. Originally delivered in 2014 by Norwegian shipyard Simek as the platform supply vessel FS Cygnus, she was built to transport equipment, fuel and cargo in demanding North Sea conditions before beginning a new life in the superyacht sector following an extensive Dutch conversion.

The vessel's underlying platform is substantial. Her original 764m² (8,224ft²) cargo deck was designed to carry up to 1,550 tonnes of equipment, providing the sort of deck strength and payload capacity that few purpose-built yacht support vessels can match.

The conversion, completed at Zwijnenburg Shipyard in the Netherlands, focuses on capability rather overhauling the hull or superstructure. The most obvious change is the large covered outbuilding added directly behind the bridge. While details remain private, it could be an enclosed helicopter hangar with a flight deck infront, creating a dedicated aviation facility rarely seen on converted support vessels.

Further aft, the original working deck has been reconfigured into a multi-level support zone. An elevated platform creates sheltered storage space beneath, allowing tenders big enough to be full sized weekenders and other equipment to remain protected during passages. The arrangement effectively transforms the former cargo deck into a floating logistics centre capable of supporting a large superyacht programme.

Interior Design

Little has been disclosed about U-81's internal arrangement, though her former role provides strong clues about how much of her enormous volume is likely being used.

Unlike a traditional yacht, much of the interior is expected to support operational requirements rather than guest entertainment. Former cargo support spaces can be adapted into workshops, dive centres, equipment lockers, spare parts stores, refrigeration facilities and expedition support areas. The vessel's original design was built around long periods away from shore support, making it particularly well suited to a support role.

The bridge is positioned forward and very high above the waterline with commanding sightlines in all directions, it was originally designed for precise offshore operations. That capability is backed by a DP2 dynamic positioning system, twin bow thrusters, twin stern thrusters and multiple positioning reference systems that allow the vessel to maintain station accurately during helicopter movements, tender launches and watersports operations.

Performance & Capabilities

Motor yacht U-81 is capable of reaching a top speed of 12 knots.
