Design & Construction

Designed around a displacement steel hull and an aluminium superstructure she features a 9.8m beam and a 2.65m draft. The yacht is built over 3 decks with an internal volume of 744 GT (Gross Tonnes).

Launched in April 2021 this yacht undertook sea trials over the following months. She was delivered to her owners in June 2021.

Exterior Design

Somnium is a 55m (180.4ft) full-custom Feadship built in aluminium, and that choice shapes both her profile and proportions. The lightweight construction reduces draft to 2.65m (8.7ft), so more volume sits above the waterline, while also improving efficiency for longer passages.

Studio De Voogt gives the yacht a low, stretched profile, and the long foredeck with a slightly aft-set superstructure creates a sense of forward motion. Automotive cues run through the design, with aft deck sections shaped like rear diffusers and detailing such as the funnel grille and flagpole drawing from classic performance cars. The result is a displacement yacht that looks fast, even though top speed sits at around 15 knots.

The foredeck forms one of the key exterior spaces. At around 11m by 9m (36.1ft by 29.5ft), it creates close to 100sq/m (1,000 sq/ft) of open deck, and loose furniture allows it to shift between lounge, dining or activity use. A forward sunbed includes its own windscreen, so the space remains usable under way.

Aft on the main deck, a 9,000-litre (2,377 gal) pool sits as a central feature, and its adjustable floor can rise flush with the deck to extend the surrounding lounge area. A counter-current system allows for swimming in place, so the pool works for both relaxation and exercise. Below this area, the layout frees up space for a beach club and gym, helped by the forward tender garage arrangement.

The sundeck adds a second spa pool along with shaded seating and a bar, while the overall deck layout links multiple social areas across levels without breaking the flow between them.

Somnium, while rooted in technical prowess and practical ingenuity, is ultimately defined by its ability to evoke a sense of exhilaration and leisure.

Interior Design

Inside, Somnium shifts to a far more expressive direction, and FM Architettura builds the entire concept around the Galápagos Islands. Materials, colours and textures draw directly from nature, so surfaces feel tactile and layered rather than polished or formal.

Custom rugs echo lagoon shapes, while tabletops and flooring take on cracked-earth patterns, and patinated finishes reflect light like water. These references run through every space, and they build a consistent visual language rather than isolated features. Large glass sections bring in daylight, so these textures change tone as light moves through the yacht.

The main saloon sits at the centre of this approach. A lagoon-inspired carpet anchors the space, and ceiling marquetry reflects the look of light on water. Coffee tables in bronze carry irregular textures, while leather wall panels with three-dimensional detailing lead toward the dining area. The dining table itself uses stitched leather and embossed bronze, and the overhead lighting introduces a subtle scale-like pattern.

Furniture across the yacht is largely custom-built, and many pieces come from Italian workshops, while fixed elements were completed at Feadship’s Aalsmeer yard. This mix gives a balance between crafted detail and precise fit, and technical elements such as vents, storage and screens are kept out of sight to maintain clean surfaces.

The upper deck saloon forms a softer, more enclosed space, centred around a curved seating area known as the “abbraccio”. This semi-circular sofa wraps around the room, so the space feels contained and informal, and it connects directly to an exterior dining area just outside.

Across all decks, the palette stays warm and natural, with irregular wood cuts, stitched leather and antique-effect mirrors adding depth. The result is a yacht that leans into texture and atmosphere rather than symmetry or formal structure.

Accommodation

Somnium accommodates up to 11 guests across five cabins, with a full-beam owner’s suite on the main deck and four guest cabins on the lower deck.

The owner’s suite uses an off-centre bed to free space for a private seating area that connects to a fold-out balcony, and this layout also allows for a separate office that can close off via a pocket door. The room uses the same layered materials as the rest of the yacht, so it feels consistent with the wider interior.

Guest cabins sit below, including a flexible children’s cabin with bunk beds that is designed to suit adults as well. These cabins connect via a central corridor that leads toward the beach club, so access to the water remains direct without passing through main social areas.

Crew accommodation supports up to 13.

Performance & Capabilities

Somnium's all-aluminum, full-displacement hull is a bold choice for a vessel of her size, usually reserved for yachts built for speed. However, Somnium defies expectations with an impressive cruising range of up to 4,000 nautical miles at a comfortable 12 knots, ensuring that her owners can embark on extensive voyages without the frequent need to refuel.

At the heart of Somnium's mechanical prowess are her powerful MTU engines, which enable her to reach maximum speeds of approximately 14.5 knots. While not designed as the fastest yacht on the water, her engines are more than capable of delivering exceptional performance and reliability, further cemented by Feadship's exacting standards.

In terms of stability, Somnium boasts state-of-the-art stabilizers that ensure a smooth and comfortable experience for all onboard. Whether cruising through open seas or at anchor, guests can enjoy the yacht's numerous amenities without the discomfort of excessive motion. The stabilizers also enhance the onboard experience, allowing for undisturbed enjoyment of the yacht's luxurious interior spaces and expansive outdoor decks.

The yacht's aluminum construction not only contributes to her reduced draft, allowing access to shallower waters but also maximizes interior volume and usable space on board, a feature that discerning owners and guests will appreciate. The material choice reflects the owner's penchant for advanced engineering and fast cars, with design elements that echo the sleekness and cutting-edge aesthetics of high-end automobiles.

Somnium's excellence is evident in every detail, from her performance and range to her stability and mechanical capabilities. A vessel that not only stands out for her beauty and bespoke interior but also for her robust and reliable engineering—a true floating sanctuary capable of travelling to the world's most exotic destinations.

Amenities

The yacht features a well-equipped gym, allowing her guests to keep up their fitness regimes at sea. Air conditioning offers increased on-board comfort. Crowning the yacht is a spacious sundeck with an inviting spread of sunpads and deck jacuzzi which provides excellent views.
