Design & Construction
Designed around a planing GRP hull and superstructure she features a 6.71m beam and a 1.52m draft. The yacht is built over 2 decks with an internal volume of 102 GT (Gross Tonnes).
Exterior Design
Delivered in 2014 as the yard's largest build, the 27.4m (90ft) flagship proved that the ride, handling and fishability that made Spencer famous could be scaled up to true superyacht dimensions without losing the qualities that tournament anglers expect from a Custom Carolina sportfisher.
From the first glance, Bangarang is unmistakably a Spencer. The profile is built around an exaggerated Carolina flare that rises into a towering bow before flowing aft through a long, unbroken sheer line. This dramatic sweep gives the yacht a powerful stance and helps disguise the sheer amount of volume contained within her 6.71m (22ft) beam and 102GT interior.
The forward sections are unusually high for a sportfisher of this type. Rather than creating a bulky appearance, Spencer tapered the topsides aggressively toward the waterline, allowing the yacht to carry substantial interior volume while maintaining the lean, athletic look expected of a serious game boat.
A heavily raked band of dark glazing forms the yacht's distinctive "black mask" effect. The forward-sloping window line mirrors the angle of the enclosed bridge above, creating a sense of movement even when the yacht is sitting still. From many angles, the profile feels more like a high-speed train than a traditional fishing yacht.
Large sculpted engine air intakes break up the hull sides amidships. Beyond their practical role feeding air to the twin 2,600hp MTU engines, they add visual muscle to the profile and hint at the performance hidden beneath the decks.
The aft section reveals the other side of Bangarang's personality. While many large sportfish yachts become increasingly yacht-like as they grow, Bangarang retains a serious fishing cockpit. The profile drops sharply from the enclosed bridge and accommodation spaces into a huge stepped mezzanine and low-freeboard cockpit. This arrangement brings anglers closer to the water during a fight while creating a striking contrast with the towering bow forward.
Bangarang arrived during the peak of the Custom Carolina building boom, when Spencer, Bayliss, Jarrett Bay and Merritt competed to build ever larger and faster tournament boats. More than a decade later, she remains one of the defining yachts of that era.
Interior Design
Bangarang was conceived as a "Yachtfish", a term often used for sportfishers that blend serious offshore capability with the comfort and volume of a cruising yacht. The challenge was creating a boat capable of extended fishing campaigns without forcing owners to sacrifice the amenities expected aboard a vessel approaching 90 feet.
The interior reflects that balance. Rich custom teak joinery runs throughout the accommodation spaces, bringing the warmth and craftsmanship long associated with high-end Carolina builds. Rather than relying on flashy materials or trend-driven styling, the focus is on quality woodwork, practical layouts and spaces designed to remain comfortable during long periods aboard.
One of the key advantages of Bangarang's size is the freedom it gave Spencer's design team. The yacht incorporates a split-saloon arrangement that separates social and service functions more effectively than smaller sportfishers. This creates greater privacy while allowing the galley and dining areas to operate independently during extended trips.
The galley makes efficient use of every available inch, with premium Miele appliances integrated throughout. Storage is extensive, reflecting the yacht's role as a long-range fishing platform capable of operating far offshore for extended periods.
Technology also plays a major role. Touchscreen control systems manage onboard functions, while multiple entertainment systems, televisions and distributed audio provide the comforts more commonly associated with cruising yachts than tournament fishing machines.
The enclosed bridge serves as both command centre and social space. Elevated above the water with excellent visibility in all directions, it provides a comfortable environment for long passages and offshore runs while maintaining direct connection to the cockpit below.
Accommodation
Bangarang's accommodation was a major part of what made the project significant. Many large sportfishers of the period prioritised cockpit space and performance at the expense of guest comfort. Spencer took a different approach.
The yacht offers accommodation across five guest staterooms, alongside dedicated captain and crew quarters. This allowed Bangarang to function equally well as a private family yacht, a tournament platform or a mothership for extended offshore expeditions.
The owner's suite spans the full beam of the yacht, taking advantage of the substantial width carried through the hull. This creates a cabin more comparable to those found aboard motor yachts than traditional sportfishers. Extensive storage, quality joinery and carefully integrated lighting help make the space suitable for long-term use rather than occasional weekends aboard.
Guest cabins continue the same design language, with custom woodwork and practical layouts throughout. The configuration provides enough flexibility for family cruising, charter-style guest use or a rotating tournament crew.
Performance & Capabilities
Motor yacht Bangarang is capable of reaching a top speed of 45 knots, and comfortably cruises at 33 knots. With her 16,656 litre fuel tanks she has a maximum range of 775 nautical miles at 33 knots. Her planing hull design means she is fast and efficient as she slices through the water.
